The book is already out — the film arrives in US cinemas on 20 November 2026.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is scheduled for release in the United States on November 20, 2026, in IMAX. It is directed by Francis Lawrence from a screenplay by Billy Ray and Michael Lesslie, and it is the sixth instalment in the film series — both a sequel to The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (2023) and a prequel to The Hunger Games (2012). Suzanne Collins' novel arrived first, published by Scholastic on March 18, 2025.
For fans who already know the book, the casting is the interesting part: Joseph Zada plays the young Haymitch Abernathy, Mckenna Grace plays Maysilee Donner, and Whitney Peak plays Lenore Dove Baird, with Ralph Fiennes as President Snow, Jesse Plemons as a young Plutarch Heavensbee, Glenn Close as District 12's Capitol escort Drusilla Sickle and Kieran Culkin as host Caesar Flickerman.
Re-reading the novel before the film lands? This quiz shows how much of the 50th Hunger Games you actually retained, and the Sunrise on the Reaping districts and tributes guide maps every named tribute to the district they come from.
Haymitch's story is also the sharpest look the series gives us at how the districts fit together.
Because the 50th Hunger Games are the Second Quarter Quell, every district has to send twice as many tributes — four children instead of two, for a field of 48 tributes rather than the usual 24. That bigger field makes the district hierarchy easier to read than ever: Districts 1, 2, 4 and 5 band together as the Career alliance, while the rest are dismissed as "Newcomers". Haymitch, Maysilee Donner and Lenore Dove Baird all come from District 12 — the coal-mining district that has produced almost no victors.
Four tributes per district instead of two — the defining rule of the Second Quarter Quell.
Haymitch, Maysilee Donner, Lenore Dove Baird, Wyatt Callow and Louella McCoy all come from the Seam.
If you were reaped for the 50th Games, which of Panem's districts would call your name?
